Reporting is Communication Access Realtime Translation
and is a reasonable accommodation under the Americans
with Disabilities Act for deaf and hard-of-hearing
persons.
The role of the CART Provider is to facilitate
communication between a student who is deaf or
hard-of-hearing, the instructor, and the student's
classmates.
The CART Provider listens to each class and writes
stenographically verbatim what is being said, which is
relayed to the student's laptop screen immediately. This allows the
student complete access to the class session…instantly!
Rather than rely on note takers, or other non-verbatim
methods, the student is given verbatim text at the
conclusion of the class lecture from which to study.
The CART Provider works with each instructor to prepare
for all course-specific terminology in advance of the
class. This ensures the accuracy of the translation.
EduCaption’s CART provider listens to the lecture over a
phone line or VoIP, such as SKYPE and AIM, and sends the
text to the student’s laptop via a web streaming
platform. An Internet connection is necessary in the
room. A remote mic is plugged into the computer to
receive the audio. Alternatively, a mic, such as a
Revolvo xTAG USB, can be used for audio over a phone line.
